Fantastic class open to total beginners, fun evening event to do with friends too! No experience necessary, good handwriting not required. In this enjoyable two-hour, one night workshop students will explore the elegant art of pointed pen calligraphy with old-fashioned style "dip" calligraphy pens - the style used by many modern calligraphers today particularly in the wedding industry.
Practice will include the basic cursive strokes that make up letterforms in the Pointed Pen style. Pointed pens can be used to create Copperplate and Spencerian calligraphy as well as most Modern Calligraphy alphabets based on cursive flow styles. Students will practice lower case and upper case letters while following sample alpahbet guides, but will be encouraged to use their own creativity and this old technique to take their handwriting to the next level.
All matierlas are supplied by the instructor, PLUS each student will receive a complimentary Calligraphy Starter Kit which includes 1 pen nib, straight penholder, small starter supply of ink and an instruction booklet with sample alphabet guides.
Not Sure What Class to Take? Introduction to Calligraphy: The Pointed Pen is a great place to start with a single session, two-hour workshop. It is for absolute beginners and all students have usually have had no previous calligraphy experience. It is also great for intermediate calligraphers to focus on the individual letters, both lower case and upper case and get in some great practice in developing their own modern lettering style.
Fun & Fancy Calligraphy: The Pointed Pen (offered as both a 3 Week Course or a Weekend Workshop) is for those who know they want to not just learn how to use the pen and practice alphabet letters - as the course starts the same as the Intro class the first week, but then continues on with connecting letters, combining upper case and lower case, working on greeting cards, envelopes, and place cards. The final week of the class students work on layout and full sentences working with inspirational quotations or a short poem of their choice.
Calligraphy II is a great class for those who have take the Introduction to Calligraphy: The Pointed Pen but are ready to take it to the next step and learn how to connect letter and combine letters to make words and phrases, work with greeting cards, envelopes and place cards (essentially the 2nd week of the 3 week course!).
Are you Left- Handed? Pointed pens use the same nibs for left or right-handers with the straight penholders. Some right handers prefer an oblique penholder (students will be able to try one in class). Some left-handers might benefit from purchasing a left-handed oblique penholder here. Don't be shy if you are left-handed, the instructor has helped many left-handers learn how to create some beautiful calligraphy, and no extra tutoring is needed, please join the group class.
